Goodbye New York
|
|
Our tour for the rest of the evening encompassed Times Square & Rockefeller Center ......as it was getting dark & the kids were getting cranky (Mama too... in my old age ) , we had to reschedule our must-sees ..... we didnt get to go to the United Nation HQ, Central Park & Grand Central (mmg kecewa tapi nak buat mcm mana...dua ketoi handbags ni dah buat hal ).....
by the time we arrived Times Square it was already dark.....however, with all the lights on , it was so lively & fun .... looks exactly like it is shown in just about every movie I've ever seen.....The best part is there are so many things to see and of course it is free to walk around..... plus, all of the broadway musicals and plays are right there along.....the area is great & has nice sites but it is crowded & the streets are congested.....
after Times Square we headed for Rockefeller Center and it has so much charm too ...All in all, both places , the buildings and the sights are breathtaking and you just cant get bored being there

Statue of Liberty
|
|

seeing Lady Liberty upclose is absolutely amazing and this is something not to be missed in NYC......
we took a ferry from Battery Park to the Staten Island (which costs around $11 per person but its worth a trip)...... at the entrance of the ferry, we had to go through a thorough security check just as you see in an airport (Ihsan pon kena check .....kena buka habih belt jeans dia dan kena keluaq dari stroller )
the ferry ride was awesome ...we went on the top deck to get an awesome view of the entire NYC skyscrapers .....it's a great way to see the statue from a distance .....we got an all around view of it and a view of Brooklyn bridge...... Once we got off on the island , we walked around the island and enjoyed the amazing view of Statue of Liberty much closer.......other than that we also took some time to admire the beautiful sight of Manhattan's skyline .
on the way back the ferry stopped at Ellis Island but we didnt get off (semua dah keletihan & ...feet were aching).....if you have seen the movie "Hitch" , you might be able to recall the scene where Will Smith & Eva Mendez have a date on this island ...... another scene is when Eva Mendez looked up her family name at the Immigration Museum and this was also filmed on Ellis island

Walking downtown Manhattan
|
|
we really enjoyed the walking tour ( it's tiring though esp to Iman who kept telling us how lucky Ihsan was for not having to walk like the rest of us ).......but it was a great way to see all kinds of little spots we would have otherwise missed out on...
after the Empire State Building we headed for Ground Zero.(where the World Trade Center stood until September 11th 2001 terrorist attack.).........to finally see the site was unbelievable although it has almost been 5 yrs since the dreadful day . (mmg rasa mcm tak percaya ..lapang saja tengah2 tu ).......what we could see was only the rebuilding efforts in progress.......
After the visit , Iman has been talking about Ground Zero countless times......It really made an impression on him
just across from Ground Zero, there is Century 21store ......known as New York's Best Kept Secret .....(but I dont think it's any secret at all now)....a friend of Mama who told us about this huge bargain department store where you can find all kinds of designer labels at low costs......(mama mmg teringin sgt2 nak masuk & tengok tapi disabarkan oleh Papa for what he said is surely true)...it'll definitely gonna be a long look round even if we didn't intend to shop ..
as we walked down further around Manhattan , we saw a lot of people in business suits walking around here ( as the financial district - Wall Street is just a block away).........then, we found our way to the famous Wall Street Bull .....this symbol of Wall Street is quite a sight. ....it sits in the middle of Broadway, very near to the Wall Street .... ..then we had a quick walk around the Broadway , the Brooklyn Bridge and then we were off to our next place - the Battery Park .. ...
it was beautiful and full of life.....There are various food stands and carts selling everything......and we also checked out the folks selling New York souvenirs in and around the park.
This is where we took the ferry to Staten Island to get a good view of the Statue of Liberty

it's lively & crowded , just what New York is all about ...the city that never sleeps .....mama didnt really like the place except for few things that relive some of the great films or tv series .
given a chance, mama would love to visit the places where Carrie Bradshaw and her pals(Charlotte, Miranda & Samantha) love to go .... wouldnt it be great if I could get a glimpse at the locations where filming of Sex & the City is done ......(I really love to watch this tapi tak pa la nampak nama Manhattan pon dah syok pasai selalu sgt dengaq Carrie sebut nama tu )......due to our limited time there ( cuma sehari di New York) , we managed to visit many of the New York's 'must-sees' & get a feel of NYC life
to do all the touristy stuff, we took the subway everywhere, which was a little difficult at first, but we got the hang of things after a while...... It isn’t the easiest subway system to use that we have been on.
The views from all sides are excellent, especially on a sunny day. You can get breathtaking views of New York city
Our first destination was the Empire State Building THE most recogniziable landmark in New York City..... and it's one of the first images thought of when the words New York are mentioned ......in fact you can see it in many great movies or tv series.....for example the observation deck ...it's like a popular site for romantic rendezvous in films......
You may have seen Sleepless in Seattle or some other movie with reference to this (mama la yg plg excited nak naik ) just to see it for real......just to be where Meg Ryan & Tom Hanks had a fateful meeting up there in that movie ......as for Iman, he was expecting to see Kong ( he has watched the legend movie "King Kong" with Papa and he believed that Kong lives atop the building ) ....
when we were about to take the second elevator up to the 86th floor observatory deck, a fake giant ape jumped out of the elevator and scared off many of the visitors who were lining up there .....(Iman la plg gumbira dapat jumpa Kong ni) ....then the Kong neared Ihsan & kissed him.....but as he looked at the hairy creature in front of him, he no longer appeared like a big fan of Kong & then cried .....not loud, not long but he cried .

Princeton
|
|
Later that day, we went to Princeton University ( just to see how this Ivy League university looks like)
We wanted to see the few sites that being featured in the 2001 Academy Award-winning film A Beautiful Mind .......but too bad couldnt identify any of them ( dah tak ingat lagi pon tak find out dulu sebelom pi situ) . ....
if u can still remember this touching film - it is based on the real life story of a genius mathematician, John F. Nash who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia ( he is also a Princeton professor and Nobel Prize winner )..... Russel Crowe stars as Nash ...... ......and there are many scenes filmed in this university..... starting from his first day as a Princeton graduate until he received his Nobel Award .....
mahasiswa Princeton University paling kecik sedang balik dari class
hoping that Iman belajaq rajin2 boleh masuk university ni one day, insyaallah

After DC we went to visit Cik Ja in New Jersey ( Cik Ja is Mama's big sis )
Iman & Ihsan were so so glad to meet their fav aunt in the whole wide world ...
Thank you Cik Ja for welcoming us into your home & for being such a good hostess ...we found your place cozy, comfortable and truly a 'home away from home'. Your hospitality was very generous and very appreciated. After all the hectic journeys to DC & NYC it was so nice to be able to get away and rest .....you provided just the right peace for us

Washington DC- Day 4
|
|
we rewarded the boys with a great trip to the Smithsonian's National Zoo on our last day in DC before hitting the road again
though we were short on time, we comfortably managed to visit many of the highlights of the zoo......
The boys had a fab time seeing the pandas ( Mei Xiang, Tian Tian & their first offspring - Tai Shan aged 6 mths old. Both the giant pandas are there on a ten-year loan from the China Wildlife Conservation Association). Then, we got to see gorrilas up close ( Ihsan was especially excited for he's a big fan of Kong ....he calls it Ki Ka ).
After having met other zoo's permanent residents , we left DC and drove to New Jersey

Washington DC - Day 3
|
|
| Quote: | Let us discard all this quibbling
about this man or the other man
this race and that race, and the
other race being inferior and
therefore they must be placed in
an inferior position......
Let us discard all these things and
unite as one people throughout
this land until we shall once more
stand up declaring that all men
are created equal |
This is one of Mr. Lincoln's quotes carved into the wall at the Lincoln Memorial and pretty touching too ... while we were there it´s hard not to get caught up thinking about big stuff like freedom, equality, and those type of ideals ......but in a way , it's also good that you get a chance to reflect on things that happened in the past as well as what is going on today
with a couple more hours to kill, following the Lincoln Memorial we set off for the Koren War Veterans Memorial ( honoring the men & women who had served in defense of South Korea )..... the best part of the memorial is the wall of faces. The images depicted on the wall were taken from actual photographs of soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen who participated in the war
