LITTLE PALEONTOLOGIST
|
|
Sue at the Field Museum is the largest, most complete, and best preserved Tyrannosaurus rex fossil yet discovered. | Quote: | | The skeleton on display is the real thing. Not a plastic model or a plaster cast. Not a patchwork or composite of bones from different specimens. |
Sue Discovery Dig
Our lil paleontologist joined a dinosaur expedition to find dinosaur bones. It was carried out under a big outdoor tent outside the museum. All the junior paleontologists picked up their field tools and started working to uncover Sue's buried bones. Then they had to go to the fossil preparation lab to finish the job, cleaning up the T. rex bones found. There the dinosaur team would help the kids to identify fossils, examine their finds, and record their observations.
To our lil' paleontologist,
We planned the trip that you've been dreaming of and we hope the memories that you've had here will last a lifetime.

A TRUE DINOSAUR FAN
|
|
There's nothing like a dinosaur can spark our Iman's imagination & curiosity since he was 2.....it all began when we bought him a giant book of animals ...and there are about 20 kinds of dinosaurs in it..... we could see the sparkle in his eyes everytime he looked at the pictures......his interest grew from then...he began recognising all the different names....and among the dinosaurs he could identify at that time :
Stegosaurus
Tyrannosaurus Rex
Iguanodon
Parasaurolophus
Ichthyosaurs
Pteranodon
Plesiosaurs
Diplodocus
Megalosaurus
Spinosaurus
Velociraptor
Kentrosaurus
Troodon
Deinonychus
Triceratops
Later he began to ask for dinosaur toys, books, videos etc. and now he wants to become a paleontologist when he grows up ....

Summer Pleasures : THE FIELD MUSEUM
|
|
This is the most interesting one of all the museums and places we visited in Chicago. The Field Museum has so many informative & entertaining exhibits that combine the fields of anthropology, botany, geology, paleontology and zoology. Some of the exhibits that we found very amazing were :-
Inside Ancient Egypt
Iman didn't like this place...as soon as we entered the exhibit area he said "I don't like this place, Mama ....it's spooky just like in Scooby Doo" .....
It was a bit scary especially when you knew there were 23 Egyptian preserved mummies were on display in the museum..
To visit the exhibit, we had to enter the Old Kingdom tomb of Unis-ankh, a pharaoh's son and then wandered through it to see everything about life in the ancient Egypt. We got to see how the Egyptians mummified dead bodies.....then the scariest part was to see the real mummies (we took some pictures of them)....we also discovered a tiny mummy of a child age 2 ....and there was an x-ray displayed showing the baby's body parts being separated in order to fit in the coffin .....
Underground Adventure
This exhibit scared Iman too ......because here you are a few inches under the surface of the soil and you'll feel like you are a hundred times smaller than all the creatures that live underground - ant. milipede, earthworm, springtail, mole cricket . The reason is to make us appreciate the world beneath our feet.... .

Upclose & Personal Encounter with Sharks
|
|
Shedd Aquarium - it's the world's largest indoor aquarium and turns 75 this year. It houses hundreds of species of fish and other aquatic life. Here, we had a face-to face encounter with sharks, piranhas, dolphins, whales, anaconda etc. and more than 600 species of both freshwater & saltwater fishes from every corner of the world. It's just like taking a quick underwater world tour .
The most enjoyable time was when Iman & Ihsan got to see some of the animals that make their homes in the Pacific water like sea otters, seals, penguins , dolphin, whales. They were amazed by the marine mammal presentation where they could witness some of the natural behaviors of dolphins and whales like tail hopping & more.
shark overhead
Iman & Ihsan were so excited for they could see clearly all the aquatic friends & a million tiny living corals of all colors, shapes and sizes through the floor-to-ceiling exhibit windows.

Summer Pleasures : America's First Planetarium
|
|

| Quote: |
The Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum is America's first planetarium and the only museum in the world with two full-size planetarium theaters |
We visited the most advanced planetarium on Earth. There, Iman had his first time exposure to science & astronomy - earth-moon system, solar system, milky way galaxy, and the Universe. He couldn't understand much though .....but at least he recognizes some of the things that exist in space like sun, moon, earth, planets, stars etc.

SUMMER PLEASURES: A trip to the Windy City
|
|
We took our little pals on a trip to the windy city - Chicago.
It was so much fun yet educational as there were a lot to learn & absorb. To save time and money we bought City Pass for each one of us ( a booklet of admission tickets to 6 Chicago's most loved attractions). The attractions included were The Hancock Observatory, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum and Museum of Science & Industry.
As Iman is old enough to understand and learn facts (simple ones) , we thought that our trip this time to museums, planetarium & aquarium would be a good headstart to introduce him to the informal learning experience of science, technology and history of other worlds in a fun way.
He may not be able to relate everything scientifically ... may not be able to digest logically at his age ...but still it is important for him to experience these places and be given opportunity to wonder beyond his imagination & curiosity. We're glad that he enjoyed it so much and we know that he has somehow learnt a lot about real things and could at least relate some of them to the world around him.

ABC's and 1,2,3's
|
|
..... no sane parents want their kids to be behind when they start school....if they aren't interested in academics, it worries us like crazy.....
He's now counting, reciting & identifying letters, recognizing words.....we try hard not to pressure Iman into all these early learning.......but while enjoying him as he is, we also try giving him plenty of exposures to different kinds of learning tools .....and most importantly nurturing a love of books and reading....
